Soopna are a Folk Trio who play a mix of foot tappin Scottish, Irish and American music all done with a sense of fun and individual interpretation. The band are based in the Edinburgh/Midlothian area. The band members are Peter McCulloch - lead singer/guitarist/raconteur, Norman Gore - vocals /guitar/ mandolin/ Walkers Crisp bag, Kenny McDonald - vocals /banjo /whistle /mouthie
The Band were formed a couple of years ago and initially played at charity events and private functions. In the the early 70's, Kenny and Peter were members of the folk band Tartan Whisky. They both had to leave the band in 1973/74 due to work commitments although they always kept in touch. Norman had also been playing in folk bands in the early 70's including Shady Grove. The three lads got together and hit it off straight away. During the couple of years of jamming Kenny took up the five string banjo and Norman started playing mandolin as well as his guitar.
After a couple of years of playing private functions and charity events, the band found themselves in demand and decided to move on to the next level. This has been their first year on the pub/club circuit and they have been in high demand.
They are a very versatile group and are quick to adjust to the needs of any given audience. Peter loves to engage with the audience and he has a series of comic routines which prove to be very popular. The boys are equally at home turning out rousing foot tapping songs as they are at performing gentle ballads with three part harmonies.
