Elena Piras

Elena PirasAn award winning singer songwriter, and accomplished live performer with a passion for folk music! Sardinia born and visually impaired since birth, Elena started singing folk, opera and Jazz professionally from a young age. At nine years old she sang in front of 30,000 people at an annual children's convention where she then went on to sing with many professional choirs.

When she moved to the UK at the age of eighteen she went on to work at the Royal Scottish Academy of Art in Edinburgh where she found her love for different styles of music, in particular Scottish and Bulgarian folk. In the year 2000 she co-founded the London Bulgarian Choir where she went on tour throughout Bulgaria. In 2009 Elena won the Open Stage Competition at Girvan Folk Festival which led to a successful gig at Glasgow City Halls as part of 'The Acoustic Affair' concert series. She will be performing at many gigs/festivals throughout the summer of 2011.

'Nothing compares to the authentic power of Scots, Irish, and Gaelic folk and the way it transports both performer and their audience into its melodies and narrative. No other music seems to convey so vividly the beauty and hardship of a land and its people. This is a new and a truly compelling experience for me, and one I hope to share with your audiences'. Elena's recent album 'Journey' is available to download on iTunes.
